Abrasive Paper Product Grit Types
Abrasive paper products are available with three different abrasive grit types:
1. Aluminium Oxide -
o Available from 36 grit to 1200 grit and from the lightest to the heaviest of weight backings.
o Aluminium oxide is perfect for use sanding and finishing raw timber, deburring and preparing steel for powder type applications and most general abrasive applications.
o Typical Cibo Abrasive products include: KP949, SA330, CA331 and KP947
2. Silicon Carbide grit -
o Available from 16 grit up to 2000 grit
o Silicon carbide abrasive grit has a much sharper cutting action and is therefore excellent on tough protective coatings such as paints and lacquers.
o Typical Cibo Abrasive products include: SP706, SP705 and SP717
3. Zirconium Oxide grit -
o Available from 36 grit to 220 grit.
o Used in more aggressive applications and particularly good on stainless steels. The tougher grit continues to cut where softer abrasive minerals will often give in.
o The most popular Cibo Abrasives paper zirconia product is KP950.
Abrasives Paper Backing Types
Abrasive backing papers are defined according to their weight. The lightest backing is an A weight and the heaviest commonly available is F weight. If you consider and A weight to be similar to a strong office paper and an F weight paper to be similar to stiff board then you won’t go far wrong. Additionally we also have a film backed papers which take paper products on to a new generation as they give a higher cut and life than paper backed products.
Secondly we can supply the abrasive papers with a plain backing for use in belts or discs or we can put a self adhesive backing or a grip (Velcro type) backing onto the papers for use in discs or sheets.
The abrasive backing papers have a significant impact on the overall performance of abrasives. A lighter weight backing will soften the abrasive action whereas a heavier backing will obviously increase aggression. Consequently lighter weight abrasive paper tends to be used most commonly in hand applications and on lighter machines such as orbital sanders or DA sanders. If you are looking to sand wood or grain metal on a wide belt sander than our KP949 F weight abrasive papers or our KP950 F weight zirconium papers will give a great life and stand up to the rigours of the application very well.
For paints and lacquer sanding on discs then cloth backed discs are not necessary. The perfect product to use is our SA330 Velcro backed abrasive discs which have a new stearate coating which gives them a long life with significantly reduced risk of clogging up.
